San José del Pacífico

High Sierra Sur village of cloud forest views, temazcal rituals, mushrooms, and slow mountain roads.

San José del Pacífico is a small mountain village high in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, where clouds slide through pine forest and the road seems to spend more time turning than going forward. It used to be a natural overnight pause between Oaxaca City and the coast; now that faster routes bypass it, the people who still come usually mean to be here.

The identity is clear: mist, mushrooms, temazcal, forest trails, and long views toward the Pacific when the weather opens. The town is famous for psychedelic mushrooms, but it is better treated as a mountain retreat than a novelty stop. Go carefully, use local guides or respected hosts for any ceremony, and do not confuse legality with wisdom.

For a simple day, walk the ridges above town, book a traditional temazcal such as Temazcal Yolitztli, and eat something warming at Teonanácatl or Comedor Monte Sinai. San José is not polished, but on a clear evening above the clouds it has a mood few Oaxacan towns can match.

Eating Out

Food in San José del Pacífico is simple, warming, and often built around Oaxacan country cooking, mushrooms, coffee, and terrace views. Choose places for atmosphere as much as menus.

Guide

Getting There

San José del Pacífico sits on Highway 175 between Oaxaca City and the Pacific coast. The road is slow and winding; from Oaxaca City, count on about three hours by van or car in normal conditions.

Shared vans run from Oaxaca City toward the mountain towns and coast, but schedules and comfort vary. If you are prone to motion sickness, plan for the curves rather than pretending they will be fine.
