Zipolite

Oaxacan beach village with Mexico's best-known clothing-optional shore and a loose counterculture mood.

Zipolite is a small beach village on the Oaxacan coast, between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. It is famous for one thing above all: Playa Zipolite, Mexico's best-known clothing-optional beach, where the old backpacker and naturist mood has survived better than it has in most beach towns.

This is not a polished resort. The main strip is a sandy, low-rise run of palapa restaurants, simple guesthouses, small bars, yoga signs, and people who have stayed longer than they planned. The beach is beautiful but serious: the surf and undertow can be dangerous, and swimming should be done with care.

Zipolite works best if you want a slow coastal stop with a strong identity. Spend the morning on the beach, climb over to Playa del Amor, watch sunset from the Roca Blanca end, and leave the big excursions to nearby Mazunte or Puerto Angel. Come for the freedom and the sunsets, not for a checklist.

Things to Do

Zipolite is simple: beach, surf, sunset, repeat. The appeal is strongest on foot, moving between the main beach, the Roca Blanca end, and the smaller coves at the edge of town. Respect the clothing-optional culture, and take the sea conditions seriously.
