Estelí is a cool, workmanlike city in Nicaragua's northern highlands, famous for tobacco, coffee and politics. It is not as pretty as León or Granada, but it has a stronger sense of itself: cigar factories on the edge of town, revolutionary murals on ordinary walls, leather shops near the market, and mountain air that makes the lowlands feel far away.
The city was a Sandinista stronghold, and that history still shows in its public art. Around the centre, murals mix revolution, ecology, saints and daily life in a way that feels less curated than in the bigger colonial cities. The cathedral on the main square is restrained by Nicaraguan standards, with pale towers and a modern interior rebuilt after the fighting of 1979.
Estelí is also the best base for the highland reserves to the north and south. Miraflor has farms, orchids, horseback rides and cloud forest. Tisey-Estanzuela is closer, with pine slopes, viewpoints and a cold waterfall that makes a good half-day escape.
