Established in 1830 as an outpost of Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, the Asistencia is often said to be part of a second, inland chain of missions. At the site is a museum, small chapel, and gatehouse.
The outpost was looted in 1834 and quickly passed into private hands. Jose de Carmen Lugo purchased the property in 1842. It was sold to the Mormons in the early 1850s, served as a school, and was later used as a furniture factory. In 1857 Dr. Benjamin Barton purchased the property. The County of San Bernardino took over in 1925, and restoration was completed in 1937.
Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Closed Sundays, Mondays, and major holidays.
