A. K. Smiley Public Library

Address 125 W. Vine Street, Redlands, CA 92373

The A. K. Smiley Public Library is the architectural anchor of downtown Redlands: a Moorish Revival sandstone building with arched arcades, terra-cotta roofs, and stained glass, set in its own small park. The interior is intact — wood-panelled reading rooms, leaded windows, a small two-storey rotunda — and the building still functions as the city's main public library. Even if you have no business there, walk in and look around.

The Lincoln Memorial Shrine sits behind the library and is administered as part of the same institution. The library is open most days; the building is most pleasant in the morning when sun comes through the east-facing rotunda.

A story
The library was donated to the city in 1898 by Albert and Alfred Smiley, identical-twin brothers who made their money running the Mohonk Mountain House in upstate New York. They built almost the entire civic centre of Redlands — library, park, post office plot — and the town remains arguably the only one in the country to owe its character almost entirely to a pair of twin philanthropists.
