Things to Do

Redlands' charm is its late-Victorian architecture — the "Marmalade Mansions" built by citrus-boom families in the 1890s — and the unusually rich collection of small museums and civic buildings that the same generation left behind. Start with Kimberly Crest, the most famous of the mansions, a French chateau with formal Italian gardens. The Lincoln Memorial Shrine attached to the public library is the only Lincoln memorial west of the Mississippi. The downtown around Orange Street is walkable and well-preserved, and the Smiley Park Historic District a few blocks south is the residential heart of the old town. Out on Barton Road, the San Bernardino Asistencia — a 19th-century outpost of Mission San Gabriel — gives you a quiet pocket of early Californian history.
