Uptown

Uptown is Minneapolis's most reliably bohemian neighbourhood, centred on the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street and extending in every direction for several blocks. The street life here is dense by Minneapolis standards: independent bookshops, vintage clothing stores, record shops, coffee houses, and a consistent stream of people on foot even on weekday mornings. The Uptown Theatre, a single-screen cinema on Hennepin from 1929 (Art Deco, beautifully preserved), is the anchor.

Lake Calhoun — Bde Maka Ska in the Dakota name now officially restored — lies immediately west, visible from several streets in the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood shifts southward into the quieter residential streets of the Wedge, and east toward Lyn-Lake, where Bryant-Lake Bowl and the ACME Comedy Company continue the eccentric community-venue tradition that defines Minneapolis at its best.
