The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota campus is a Frank Gehry building from 1993 — a stainless steel sculptural form perched on a bluff above the Mississippi River, recognisable from the Washington Avenue Bridge as one of the more dramatic buildings in the American Midwest. The building is free to enter and worth visiting for the architecture alone.
The collection covers American art from the early 20th century onwards, with particular strength in Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, and German Expressionism. The river-facing galleries have windows that frame views of the Mississippi Gorge — an unusual combination of art and landscape that the building exploits deliberately. The location on the East Bank campus makes it easy to combine with a walk across the Stone Arch Bridge to the Mill City Museum.
