The Smith-McDowell House Museum preserves Asheville’s oldest surviving house, a brick antebellum home that predates the city’s better-known Gilded Age and arts-and-crafts image. Its rooms and exhibits trace local families, enslaved labour, the Civil War era, and changing mountain society.
It is a quieter and more sober visit than the Biltmore orbit, which is part of its value. Come for local history at a human scale, especially if you want Asheville to feel less like a restaurant-and-mountain weekend and more like an old Appalachian city.
