Commerce and the Mickey Mantle Statue

The next town up Route 66 from Miami is Commerce, the boyhood home of New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle. A nine-foot bronze statue of "The Commerce Comet" in mid-swing stands outside the high-school baseball field at North Mickey Mantle Boulevard.

Mantle's modest childhood house at 319 South Quincy Street has been restored and bears a marker. Bring a baseball; people often leave them at the base of the statue.

A story
Mickey Mantle grew up in a small clapboard house in Commerce, the son of a lead miner, and learned to switch-hit baseball by batting against his father in the back yard. He left for the New York Yankees in 1949 and is buried in Dallas, but Commerce still belongs to him.
