Miami City Cemetery

Miami's old city cemetery, on the northern edge of town, holds the graves of many of the city's founding zinc-mining families and the occasional Route 66 motorist who never made it any further west. The older sections are overgrown in places and have a wonderfully unkempt feel.

It is the kind of place to wander rather than visit with a list. Drive in on Foreman Avenue and walk the older rows; bring water in summer.

A story
The cemetery is best known locally for a Victorian-era grave in which a young woman is said to have been encased in concrete by a grieving family who feared her body would be stolen for medical study — a common dread in the late nineteenth century.
