Frankoma Pottery

Frankoma is the oldest continuously operating pottery in Oklahoma, founded in 1933 by University of Oklahoma art professor John Frank and run by various owners since the family sold the firm in 1991. The trademark earth-tone glazes and the Wagonwheel dinnerware pattern have made Frankoma a collectors' favourite for decades.

The Sapulpa works on Frankoma Road still produce pottery and run a retail outlet selling first-quality and seconds direct from the kilns. Plant tours, when offered, run weekday mornings; check ahead, as schedules vary with production. The John Frank House next door is on the National Register and worth a five-minute look from the street.

A story
John Frank started the pottery in Norman, Oklahoma in 1933 and moved it to Sapulpa in 1938 to be near the brick-quality clay deposits at Sugar Loaf Hill. The trademark Wagonwheel dinnerware — still in production today — was first introduced in 1942 and became one of the most-recognised American ceramic patterns of the 20th century.
