A 66-foot-tall painted steel gas pump stands on the old Route 66 alignment just north of downtown Sapulpa, in front of the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum. It is exactly the kind of oversized roadside Americana that the Mother Road inspired, and Sapulpa has wisely doubled down ā the surrounding plaza has been redeveloped with murals, an old neon sign collection, and a tourist information booth.
The auto museum behind the pump is a small but well-curated collection of 1930sā60s automobiles and Route 66 memorabilia, open Wednesday through Saturday. Free to wander the outside; small admission for the museum interior. About a five-minute drive from downtown.
