The Hunter holds one of the strongest collections of American art in the South, spanning Hudson River School landscapes to twentieth-century modernism and contemporary work. The collection is hung across a 1904 limestone mansion, a 1975 brutalist block, and a 2005 zinc-and-glass addition that hangs out over the bluff above the Tennessee River.
The riverside sculpture terrace alone is worth the trip. The museum sits at the heart of the Bluff View Art District, a small enclave of restaurants, gardens, and galleries linked by stone walkways high above the water. Allow two hours.
