Point Park

Civil War battlefield park at the summit of Lookout Mountain with seven-state views

The federally-managed park sits at the northern tip of Lookout Mountain on the site of the November 1863 "Battle Above the Clouds." Cannon emplacements, a parade ground, monuments, and the imposing New York Peace Memorial mark the summit. The Ochs Memorial Museum at the bluff edge gives a clear account of the Chattanooga campaign.

The view straight down to the Tennessee River bend and across to Missionary Ridge is one of the most arresting urban panoramas in the South. Combine with Sunset Rock, a short walk away, for an even better viewpoint. Admission is a few dollars, payable at the gatehouse.

A story
On a clear day visitors really can see into seven states from the bluff, though the marker itself was a Rock City marketing claim from the 1930s.
