Lookout Mountain

Civil War battlefield with views across seven states

The defining landmark of Chattanooga. The summit offers views across seven states, and the mountain holds three of the city's most popular attractions: Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline Railway. Point Park at the top preserves the Civil War battlefield. You can drive up or take the Incline Railway from St. Elmo at the base.

A story
During the 'Battle Above the Clouds' on November 24, 1863, Union forces fought their way up Lookout Mountain through fog so thick that commanders on both sides could not see the battle. By the next morning the Confederate flag had been replaced by the Stars and Stripes at the summit.
