The Chattanooga Bakery has been making MoonPies since 1917, when a travelling salesman supposedly asked a Kentucky coal miner what snack he wanted and was told "something as big as the moon." The result is two graham crackers, a marshmallow filling, and a chocolate (or banana, or vanilla) coating — an enduring Southern fixation.
The downtown store sells every flavour, vintage advertising tins, T-shirts, and the seasonal limited editions. The bakery itself is still in town but does not run tours. Pair the visit with an RC Cola, the traditional accompaniment.
