Bench Lake Trail is the quieter half of the Bench and Snow Lakes walk, leaving Stevens Canyon Road for a short but rewarding stretch of forest, meadow, and lake country. The trail does not have the instant fame of Skyline or the big commitment of Summerland, but it gives you a gentler Rainier day: huckleberry slopes, subalpine flowers in season, and a lake basin that can feel surprisingly removed from the road.
The usual walk continues toward Snow Lake, but Bench Lake is the first real payoff and the better place to slow down if clouds are moving across the mountain. Go in midsummer or early autumn, bring insect repellent when the meadows are wet, and treat the trail as a real mountain path rather than a roadside stroll.
