San Vicente

San Vicente is a remote mining village about 130 kilometres north of Tupiza, at over 4,500 metres on the high Andean altiplano. It is famous for one thing: it is where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are believed to have died in a shootout with Bolivian soldiers in 1908.

There is little to see — a small cemetery, a modest marker, the rough adobe house where the gunfight is thought to have happened. Most Tupiza agencies will work San Vicente into a longer 4-day jeep tour towards the Salar de Uyuni for a small surcharge.

A story
On 6 November 1908 two strangers checked into a small house here, paid for dinner with a stolen Bolivian Army mule, and were attacked by a military patrol. The Pinkertons later concluded — and most historians agree — that the dead men were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
