Tupiza is the alternative starting point for the great four-day jeep loop through southwestern Bolivia: the high-altitude lakes of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, the geysers at Sol de Mañana, the Laguna Colorada with its flamingos and the Salar de Uyuni itself.
Starting from Tupiza rather than Uyuni reverses the usual itinerary — you end at the salt flats instead of beginning there — and the route is generally quieter and the agencies smaller. The full loop is around 1,000 kilometres of rough roads and ends at the railway town of Uyuni.
