Prainha

A small, sheltered beach reached only on foot via a 40-minute walk south from Itacaré through the Costa do Cacau Environmental Protection Area. The path drops steeply down to the sand through dense Atlantic Forest; you pass small streams, vine-tangled trees, and (if you are lucky) howler monkeys overhead.

Prainha itself is short, sweet, and almost always quiet — most people who come here have made the effort to walk in. The water is clear, the swimming is good, and the surf is gentler than on the beaches to the north. Bring water, snacks, and shoes you can walk in: there are no facilities at the beach.

A story
The Atlantic Forest along the trail to Prainha holds one of the last viable populations of the golden-headed lion tamarin, an endangered primate found only in this corner of Bahia. Walk quietly and you may spot one in the canopy — bright orange, with a black face and a head of golden fur.
