Bumba Meu Boi Festival

Bumba Meu Boi is São Luís's defining cultural festival, celebrated across June with a series of increasingly spectacular performances in public squares, parks, and arenas throughout the city. The festival tells the story of a folk tale — a bull killed and resurrected through folk magic — but the spectacle of costumes, choreography, and music has grown far beyond the original narrative.

Each of the city's major Bumba Meu Boi groups performs their distinctive version of the festival: some in the traditional Afro-Maranhão style with heavy drumming; others in the more Portuguese-influenced style with string instruments and a different tempo. If you're in São Luís in June, go to as many performances as you can. The main presentations are free and open to the public. It is, without exaggeration, one of the greatest folk festivals in South America.

A story
The Bumba Meu Boi of Maranhão is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The festival tradition dates back to at least the 18th century, and in São Luís it has developed into multiple distinct "groups" (grupos), each with their own musical style (toadas), costume aesthetic, and ritual traditions. The costumes, decorated with embroidery, mirrors, sequins, and feathers, can take a year to create and cost tens of thousands of reais.
