Casa de Nhozinho is a small museum dedicated to the folk artist Mestre Nhozinho, whose intricate handmade models of traditional Maranhão life fill the collection. The models are charming and informative: you can see exactly how a colonial-era sugar mill worked, what the market looked like before modernization, and how the Bumba Meu Boi groups organized their performances.
The museum is housed in an old colonial building and is easy to miss — it's not heavily promoted. But it's one of the more genuinely touching cultural institutions in the city, a monument to the creativity of someone who had no formal education but enormous skill and love for his subject.
