Palácio dos Leões

The Palácio dos Leões is the official residence and seat of the Governor of Maranhão, occupying a prime position at the edge of the old city overlooking the bay. The building's exterior, with its symmetrical facade and the stone lions that give it its name, is one of the most recognizable images of São Luís.

The palace is open to the public on certain days and the interior — decorated with azulejo panels, French furniture, and portraits of colonial governors — is worth seeing. The terrace at the back overlooks the bay and the waterfront of the old town, and on a clear morning the view is superb. Check opening hours at the tourist information centre in Praia Grande before visiting.

A story
The Palácio dos Leões was built on the site of the original French fort that the founders of São Luís constructed in 1612. The fort was later seized by the Dutch (who held the city briefly) and then the Portuguese, who rebuilt it as a governor's palace. The current building dates mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries and has been the seat of Maranhão's government ever since — which makes it one of the oldest continuously functioning government buildings in Brazil.
