Church of Pantaléão

The Church of Pantaléão is an 18th-century Roman Catholic church in the historic centre of São Luís, standing at the bottom of the Praia Grande neighbourhood near the waterfront. Its facade is covered in blue and white azulejo tiles in the traditional Portuguese style, making it one of the most photographed buildings in the city.

The interior is less dramatic than some of the city's other churches, but the building's exterior and its setting — on a small square at the edge of the colonial district — make it worth a visit. The church is still active, and masses draw local parishioners who have worshipped here for generations, giving the whole place a sense of living continuity rather than preserved heritage.

A story
The church was originally built in the 17th century by the Jesuits, who arrived in Maranhão shortly after the Portuguese took the city from the French. The Jesuits were eventually expelled from Brazil in 1759, and the church passed through various hands before becoming a parish church. Its azulejo-covered facade is one of the finest examples of Portuguese colonial religious architecture in the city.
