The Casa da Festa is a small museum and cultural centre dedicated to the festivals and popular celebrations of Maranhão. Where the Centro de Cultura Popular focuses on Bumba Meu Boi, Casa da Festa has a broader scope, covering the Tambor de Crioula (an Afro-Maranhão drum dance tradition), the Cacuriá, the Lelê, and other folk forms that are specific to the state.
The museum has a good educational mission, explaining the African and indigenous roots of each tradition and the ways they have evolved over centuries. It also serves as a community centre for the groups that maintain these traditions, so there's occasionally a rehearsal or workshop happening that you might be invited to watch.
