Fonte do Ribeiro

Fonte do Ribeiro is a historic public fountain in the heart of Praia Grande, one of the oldest surviving urban infrastructure elements in São Luís. In the colonial period, public fountains like this one were the main water supply for the neighbourhood, and their locations determined where people gathered, where commerce happened, and where social life played out.

Today the fountain still runs and the surrounding square is a meeting point in the neighbourhood, particularly in the afternoon when the heat of the day breaks and people come out to sit and talk. It's a small but pleasant detail of the city's colonial fabric that most visitors walk past without noticing.
