Lago Villarrica

Lago Villarrica is a deep glacial lake stretching 22 kilometres from east to west, with the smoking cone of the volcano reflected in its clear blue waters on calm mornings. The lake is warm enough for swimming from November through March, and the beach in central Pucón — a strip of dark volcanic sand — is pleasantly lively in summer.

Beyond the town beach, the lake offers kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat trips to quieter coves on the northern shore. The water is remarkably clean and the views across to the volcano make almost any activity feel spectacular. Several operators rent kayaks and SUP boards near the pier in central Pucón.

A story
The lake takes its name from the town of Villarrica, founded in 1552 by the Spanish and destroyed repeatedly by the Mapuche people during their wars of resistance. The shoreline where Pucón now stands was the frontier between colonial Chile and unconquered Mapuche territory for over three centuries.
