Trancura River Rafting

The Trancura River flows west from the cordillera, passing through narrow gorges and over rocky rapids before emptying into Lago Villarrica just east of Pucón. There are two main sections for rafting: the Lower Trancura (Class III-IV, suitable for beginners) and the Upper Trancura (Class IV-V, for experienced rafters or those seeking a more intense experience).

Most tour agencies in Pucón offer half-day trips on the Lower Trancura, typically including equipment, a guide, and a post-trip barbecue. The scenery along the river — native forest, volcanic cliffs, and occasional views of the volcano — is excellent. The river runs year-round, but peak season for rafting is October through March when flows are most predictable.

A story
The Trancura runs through territory the Mapuche defended against Spanish and Chilean forces for four centuries. The most dramatic section of river — the Alto Trancura — is technically Class IV-V, meaning a stretch that Chilean guides sometimes call "el caño": the cannon. Several rafting operations offer trips here year-round, but flows are highest and most exciting between August and November, when Andean snowmelt swells the river.
