Villarrica Ski Center

The ski resort on the slopes of Volcán Villarrica operates from June to September, with around 20 runs spread across 500 vertical metres. It is modest by international standards but offers the unusual experience of skiing on an active volcano — sulfurous steam occasionally drifts across the upper pistes. The resort is run by a Chilean company and is primarily patronised by Chileans from Santiago.

Lift passes are affordable compared to European or North American resorts. Equipment rental is available on site. The snow quality is variable — the continental Andean climate can produce both excellent powder and icy, windswept conditions in the same week. Weekends in July are busy; mid-week visits in June or August are quieter and often offer better snow.
