Pucón

Lakeside Chilean adventure town below Volcán Villarrica, with hot springs, rafting, and Araucanía forests

Pucón is Chile's adventure capital, a lakeside town in the Araucanía region with the smoking cone of Volcán Villarrica looming directly above it. The volcano is the main event — climbing to the crater is a demanding but achievable day trip, involving a 1,500-metre ascent through forest and then up a glacier to peer into the glowing lava lake at the summit. It is one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world, and the experience is extraordinary.

But Pucón has more than just the volcano. The town sits on the shore of Lago Villarrica, with hot springs, whitewater rafting on the Trancura River, mountain biking, and hiking in Huerquehue National Park — a beautiful circuit through araucaria forests and alpine lakes. In winter, the ski resort on the volcano's slopes draws a modest crowd.

The town itself is compact and geared toward travellers, with plenty of tour operators, good restaurants, and a relaxed backpacker vibe. It can feel touristy in peak season (January–February), but the natural setting is hard to beat.
