Brunet Castle (Palacio Yarur)

1923 Norman-style cliff-top castle, also known as Palacio Yarur

The Brunet Castle stands on the high ground of Cerro Castillo, just back from the coast road and easily visible from the sea. It was built in 1923 for the Brunet family in a heavy Norman style — round corner towers, slate roofs, mullioned windows — and was later sold to the Yarur textile family, after whom it is also still sometimes called.

The castle is privately owned and not open to the public, but the exterior is easily seen from the public roads around Cerro Castillo. Combined with the nearby Palace of Cerro Castillo — the official summer residence of the President of Chile — it gives a sense of the strange concentration of mock-medieval architecture on this stretch of coast.
