Viña del Mar

Chilean beach resort beside Valparaíso, known for parks, cold Pacific water, and its music festival.

Viña del Mar — "Viña" to Chileans — is the country's most popular beach resort, just a short ride north along the coast from Valparaíso. It is loved by Chileans for its cleanliness, parks, and casino, though foreign visitors sometimes find it short on character compared to its grittier neighbour. The town has wide avenues, manicured gardens, and high-rise apartment blocks lining the waterfront.

Do not come expecting warm water — the Humboldt Current keeps the Pacific bitterly cold here even in the height of summer. The beaches are popular for sunbathing and walking, but swimming takes determination. The highlight of the year is the Festival de la Canción, Chile's biggest music festival, held each February in the Quinta Vergara amphitheatre.

Viña is easily reached from Valparaíso by metro (about 20 minutes) or from Santiago by bus (roughly 90 minutes on the autopista).
