Manizales is the capital of Colombia's coffee axis (eje cafetero), and a working-farm visit is the most enjoyable way to understand what that means. Hacienda Venecia, on the road to the lowlands about 40 minutes from the city, is the best-known farm for visitors — a fourth-generation family operation that runs daily tours covering the entire process from seedling to cup.
Several other haciendas in the surrounding hills run similar tours, including Hacienda Guayabal and Café de la Cumbre. Most tours include a tasting of the farm's own beans and a meal of bandeja paisa or trout from a nearby river. Book a day ahead through any city hotel.
