Torre de Herveo

The Torre de Herveo (also known as Torre del Cable) is a slender, 25-metre wooden lattice tower preserved on the campus of the National University of Colombia in Manizales. It is the only intact tower from the historic coffee cableway that once connected Manizales to the rail line at Mariquita.

The tower is set on a small plaza with interpretation panels explaining the cableway's history. It is a short walk from the Estadio Palogrande and combines naturally with a wider stroll through the university quarter.

A story
The wooden tower is the last surviving support of the Manizales–Mariquita aerial cableway — a 72-kilometre ropeway built between 1913 and 1922 to haul coffee over the Cordillera Central, eliminating a five-day mule journey. Engineers from Birmingham designed the tower in Norwegian pine because steel could not be shipped in during the First World War.
