Limbe Wildlife Centre

The Limbe Wildlife Centre is one of the most important primate sanctuaries in West and Central Africa, caring for chimpanzees, western lowland gorillas, drills, and other primates rescued from the bushmeat trade and illegal pet market. The centre operates on proper conservation principles — animals are kept in large, naturalistic enclosures rather than cages, and the focus is on rehabilitation and education rather than entertainment.

Drills deserve special attention: this large, intensely coloured forest baboon is one of Africa's most endangered primates, and Limbe holds one of the few viable captive populations. Walking through the centre and watching a troupe of chimps sort out their social hierarchy, or seeing a young gorilla pick through branches, is a more sobering and worthwhile experience than most wildlife parks manage.

The centre is well run, the entry fee is reasonable, and the knowledgeable guides can explain the stories of individual animals. Allow at least two hours.
