Mount Cameroon

Mount Cameroon looms over the town — at 4,095 metres it is the highest peak in West Africa and one of the continent's most active volcanoes, with eruptions recorded as recently as 1999 and 2000. On clear mornings, usually in the dry season, the summit is visible from Limbe's waterfront, a dramatic presence above the coast.

Hiking expeditions up Mount Cameroon depart from Buea, about 30 kilometres north of Limbe and a 30-minute drive away. The climb is serious — two to three days return, with a significant altitude gain — and requires a local guide, who can be arranged through organisations in Buea. The mountain is worth it: the upper slopes pass through montane forest and open moorland, and the views over the coast from the caldera rim are extraordinary.

Limbe is the natural base for combining a beach stay with a mountain hike: rest and swim at Mile Six, then drive up to Buea for the ascent.
