Mile Six is the best beach in the Limbe area and the reason most visitors make the trip from Douala. The sand is black — a direct consequence of Mount Cameroon's volcanic geology, ground fine enough to feel silky underfoot — and the stretch here is free of the oil contamination that affects parts of the coast closer to the port. Swimming is safe, the waves are manageable, and the beach scene at weekends is lively without being overwhelming, with vendors selling cold drinks and grilled fish along the shore.
The beach sits a few kilometres outside town and requires a moto-taxi or shared car to reach from the centre of Limbe, but the journey takes less than ten minutes. On weekdays it is quiet enough that you can have a long stretch of black sand more or less to yourself.
