The Canyon

The Canyon is a dramatic underwater cut in the reef just north of Dahab town, accessed via a short walk north along the coast from the Lighthouse. A narrow crack in the seabed opens into a descending cleft that drops to about 53 metres. The walls are encrusted with soft corals and home to sleeping nurse sharks, moray eels, and shoals of glassfish that part like curtains as you pass through.

The dive begins with a descent through the crack — barely wide enough to fin through — and then opens into a cavernous space below. The ascent takes you back up the canyon wall where you can explore the coral garden in the shallows. This is an intermediate dive requiring good buoyancy control; the narrow entrance and the depth demand a measure of experience. Most dive centres in Dahab include the Canyon in their intermediate dive packages.

A story
The Canyon is where many experienced divers first encounter the optical illusion that makes underwater canyons so disorientating: at depth, with walls on three sides and the blue water below fading to black, the senses lose their anchoring to the surface world. Dahab's canyon adds to this by being narrow enough in places that you can touch both walls simultaneously — a profoundly alien environment that is difficult to describe to non-divers.
