The Lagoon

The Lagoon is a broad, shallow sandy bay about 3 kilometres south of central Dahab, and the hub of the town's windsurfing and kitesurfing scene. A long sandbar encloses the inner bay, keeping the water flat and manageable, while the steady afternoon thermal wind arrives reliably enough to set your watch by. Several operators on the beach offer lessons, equipment rental, and full kitesurfing courses for all levels.

On calmer mornings the Lagoon is a pleasant swimming and relaxing spot, with a sandy bottom and warm, clear water. It is also the most family-friendly swimming area in Dahab — shallow enough for children and sheltered from the swells that reach the reef areas further north. Microbus taxis from the Masbat area take five minutes and charge very little.

A story
The Lagoon's consistent afternoon wind is a product of the topography: the mountains of the Sinai interior create a thermal differential that pulls air off the Gulf of Aqaba in the afternoons, reliably at 15 to 25 knots, making Dahab one of the most predictable kitesurfing venues in the world. Professional kitesurfers training here describe it as one of the few places where you can nearly guarantee flat water and strong wind simultaneously.
