Eduardo Mondlane University

The country's largest university, founded as Universidade de Lourenço Marques in 1962

Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) is Mozambique's oldest and largest university, founded in 1962 as the Universidade de Lourenço Marques and renamed after the assassinated FRELIMO leader Eduardo Mondlane at independence. The main campus sits on a generous wooded site north of the centre, with mid-century modernist buildings spread around lawns and palm avenues.

The campus includes the Museum of Geology (in the Faculty of Sciences), a small Archaeology Museum with material from the Mapungubwe-era Limpopo Valley, and an extensive Botanical Garden. The campus is open to visitors during weekday hours and is a peaceful place to walk. The university bookshop is one of the better academic shops in the country.
