The Old Fortress, started in 1890 by the German colonial Schutztruppe, is the oldest surviving building in Windhoek. The whitewashed walls, tower, and parade ground look more Moorish than Prussian and form a pleasant contrast to the modern Independence Memorial Museum next door.
For many years the Alte Feste housed the National Museum of Namibia, with exhibits on the liberation struggle. It is currently closed for renovation but the exterior is still worth a walk — the views across Independence Avenue and the surrounding hills are among the best in the centre.
