Heinitzburg

Hilltop German castle from 1914, now a boutique hotel and restaurant

Three eccentric German castles sit on the ridges above Windhoek — Heinitzburg, Schwerinsburg, and Sanderburg — built between 1905 and 1914 by a senior colonial officer named Wilhelm Sander as private homes and follies. Heinitzburg, the most accessible of the three, sits on a hilltop just east of the centre and now operates as a small hotel and restaurant.

You do not need to be staying there to walk up for a drink at sunset. The terrace looks out over the city to the dry mountains beyond, and the dining room serves a respectable Namibian-European menu. The other two castles are private residences, but you can photograph them from the road.
