St. Mary's Cathedral, consecrated in 1908, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Windhoek and one of the more imposing buildings of the German colonial era. Twin red-brick towers face Werner List Street; the interior is plainer than the exterior suggests but the stained glass windows are worth a look.
The cathedral remains a working parish — most masses are in English and Afrikaans, with German on the first Sunday of the month. It complements Christuskirche as the second of the city's notable colonial-era churches, and the two together neatly capture the rivalry between Protestant and Catholic missionaries in southern Africa.
