The National Museum of Namibia is divided between two sites in the city. The historical exhibits in the Alte Feste covered the liberation struggle and colonial period; that wing is currently closed for renovation. The natural history collection at the Owela Museum on Robert Mugabe Avenue is open daily — fossils, rocks, San hunting tools, ostrich-eggshell beadwork, and stuffed Namibian fauna.
A small section also displays a few of the Gibeon Meteorites, a famous prehistoric meteorite shower fragments found near the southern Namibian town of that name. The display in the city centre (on Post Street Mall) holds the bulk of the collection.
