Bar Beach

Atlantic beach running along the south edge of Victoria Island

Bar Beach runs along the entire south edge of Victoria Island — a wide Atlantic beach that was the city's main weekend beach until the 2000s, when erosion forced the construction of the Eko Atlantic seawall. The beach is narrower and rougher than it used to be, the surf is heavy and the rip currents are real, but it is still the place where Lagos goes to walk on the sand, ride a horse, watch a Pentecostal service, and eat suya at sunset. Swimming is not really an option; the rip pulls hard.
