The leafy ridge above the city centre, lined with Victorian and Edwardian villas and some of the city's grander 20th-century apartment blocks. The Berea was Durban's first wealthy suburb and still has the feel of one — mature jacarandas and flame trees, quiet streets, and views down over the harbour and the beachfront. Wander Musgrave Road for the architecture, or duck into the Durban Botanic Gardens at the bottom of the hill, the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa, founded in 1849.
