The upmarket seaside suburb fifteen minutes north of central Durban, with calmer beaches than the Golden Mile and a more polished feel. The red-and-white Umhlanga Lighthouse is the standard postcard shot. The promenade is good for an evening walk, and Gateway — the giant shopping mall — is just inland. If you'd rather stay somewhere quieter than the Durban beachfront, this is where most visitors end up.
