Durban's six-kilometre beachfront promenade, running from uShaka in the south to the Suncoast Casino in the north. The sand is wide, the water is warm, and the surf — particularly at New Pier and North Beach — is some of the best in the country. The promenade itself was rebuilt for the 2010 World Cup and is now lined with rickshaw drivers in elaborate Zulu headdresses, ice-cream vendors, and a flow of joggers, surfers and families that doesn't really stop. Swim only in the netted areas; sharks are rare but not impossible.
