KwaMashu

Large Zulu township north of Durban, increasingly visitable with a guide

KwaMashu is the largest Zulu township in Durban, established in the 1950s when residents of the central Cato Manor neighbourhood were forcibly removed under apartheid. Today it is home to roughly 400,000 people and to the Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre, one of the most active performing-arts venues in KwaZulu-Natal.

Visits are best arranged through a guide — locals like Sphephelo Mbatha at Ekhaya can show you the music scene, a shisanyama (open-air braai), and the heritage sites tied to the township's apartheid history. The Ekhaya jazz nights on Saturday are a genuine draw.
